“The Age of Influence” is a new ABC newS studios docu-series examining the dark side of influencer culture through today’s biggest social media scandals.
Featured in Episodes 1 & 5
“The Age of Influence”
EPISODE 1: Once known as the infamous New York ‘Swiffer Girl’, Danielle Miller became the unwilling subject of one of the internet's first viral videos. As she attempts to rewrite her narrative and transform herself into a glamorous influencer, the girl whose identity was stolen from her as a young teen grows up to be a serial identity thief herself. Social media proves her undoing, as images from her lavish lifestyle implicate her in multiple cases of fraud. But like her Rikers roomie, the famed SOHO grifter Anna Delvey, Danielle is doubling down on her infamy and insisting you should never count her out.
EPISODE 5: Successful child influencers are adept at putting on a show, but what happens when the camera turns off? The terrifying tale of Machelle Hobson explores the tragedy that befell her adopted children, whose lives seemed picture perfect on their popular Youtube series, ‘Fantastic Adventures’. But behind the scenes, abuse ran rampant and the systems in place failed the children at every turn – begging the question: how can our children best be protected in the age of influence?

HAS ShARENTING GONE TOO FAR?
Nowadays, parents post about their children on social media platforms more than ever. “Sharenting” is the term used to describe parents publicizing sensitive content or oversharing their children on the internet. Proponents feel sharing their family is an expression of parental pride and argue that critics take their posts out of context. Critics say oversharing is an invasion of children’s privacy, dangerous, and harmful to the relationship between parent and child. Dr. Phil speaks with the Furrha family, a popular social media family with roughly 16 million followers, as well as experts and parents, to discuss online sharing and what parents should consider before posting.

"Sharenthood" author warns of potential risks of sharing photos of your kids online
“If you share a picture of your child for the first day of school and they have their unicorn backpack or their Baby Yoda binder, you are sharing with the world things that are important to your child. Things that are meaningful to them,” she said. "And unfortunately there are folks, sometimes even within our own networks, we may not even realize it as parents, who could use that information in ways that are unfair or even predatory towards our children.”
